Concept Maps

Research the difference between concept maps and graphic organizers.  1)  State the definition of each and the differences between them.  2)  Give a specific example of a lesson using graphic organizers in math or science.  2)  Give a specific example of a lesson using concept maps in language arts or social studies.

  1. 1. A concept map is a diagram that visually illustrates the relationships between concepts. It is particularly useful in planning essays or presentations. They can be used to generate discussion and promote higher-level thinking. A graphic organizer describes any chart, table, or diagram that organizes information visually. Graphic organizers range from the simple to complex and take on a variety of purposes. Some are simply lists of data, while others show deeper connections between ideas. Therefore, a concept map is a type of graphic organizer, but not all graphic organizers are concept maps.

    2. A graphic organizer that displays a hierarchic sequence of events could easily be used in a science lesson about food chains and interactions within an ecosystem.

    3. Concept maps could be used in social studies lessons to investigate the causes, major events, and aftermath of historical events such as World War II.

  2. Concept maps graphically illustrate relationships between information. In a concept map, two or more concepts are linked by words that describe their relationship.

    A graphic organizer is an instructional tool used to illustrate a student or class's prior knowledge about a topic or section of text and one used by students to brainstorm ideas.

    A graphic organizer could be used in math to shoe the order of operations in a problem. For example "pemdas".

    A concept map could be used in social studies to show the similarities between two different cultures.

  3. A concept map is a method of visually organizing facts and knowledge and the relationship between them. A writing lesson where the student would pick a sport to write about and map categories, such as: rules of the game, history of the sport, etc.

    Graphic organizers organize information by using graphics or diagrams in order to aid in memorizing information. A science example would be the life cycle of the butterfly.

    A concept map is a kind of graphic organizer.

  4. A concept map is a diagram showing the relationship between concepts. It is a tool used to organize and represent knowledge. A social studies lesson that a concept map could be used is when talking about the Presidents of the United States. Students could put the Presidents in order in a flow chart. A flow chart tends to have boxes below the main box and they can add important details about each President.

    A graphic organizer is a visual representation of knowledge, concepts, thoughts, or ideas. It is often in formats such as charts, tables, and graphs. A math lesson that uses a graphic organizer would be a lesson using the place value charts. When students are working with units, rods, and flats on the place value chart they are using a graphic organizer. It helps students move things around and stay organized and visual represent for example 128.

However a graphic organizer are visual representations of knowledge, concepts, thoughts, or ideas. Graphic Organizers are bits of data in easy-to-understand formats, such as charts, tables, and graphs. In a science class a animal life cycle can be made into graphic organizer. In a History class students can use a concept map to create connections between the causes and effects of a series of events.
